A heart-stopping moment

One of these bad boys potentially saved my son’s life!
And numerous other lives, I’m sure.
A few weeks back, my daughter-by-proxy who lives approximately 140 miles from us, was home visiting for the day. On her way home that evening, she dozed off while driving and went into the ditch. Her car was not damaged (still driveable), her passenger was without harm, but she ended up with whiplash and a concussion. Thankfully, they were wearing seatbelts…..I think. I assume, anyway. I forgot to ask.
Recently, my son, 17, was driving, 5:30am, to pick a buddy up so they could get to work. He dozed off and ended up hitting the guard rail on the other side of the road. Thankfully, he was wearing a seatbelt and was unscathed. He had yet to pick up his passenger so nobody was with him. The car, however, didn’t fair so well. She’s pretty banged up.
I think of these accidents (near-misses), and remember just how quickly life can be taken. In just one single second, life can be over. Loved ones are left mourning for the one who is gone. Countless lives are affected in that very second, much heartbreak ensues.
Often times, we think, ‘oh, it won’t happen to me me’ or ‘it won’t happen to my family.’
But we are wrong. Death, as stated in previous post, is inevitable. Death comes in many forms, but my son’s experience and my daughter-by-proxy’s experience could ultimately been driving-related.
Parents. speak to your children about the dangers of driving while drowsy. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 6400 deaths annually are attributed to driving while drowsy.
This could have been my son, my daughter.
Thankfully, neither were hurt, both are okay. My heart is okay. My nerves, well my nerves have been a jumbled mess since my first child 23 years ago. This got much worse after we lost one of our son’s 4 years ago. And with each near-miss, my frazzled nerves get even more frazzled.
But for today, all is well.
