So, right now I am reading Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. I have always been more of a romance genre reader, since my early teens. This year, I decided to broaden my reading horizons and have been buying books outside the romance genre. It is a historical fiction book based on true events in Alabama during the 70’s in an African American community.

To understand my choice in genres, you should know that I have anxiety and it’s only getting worse as I get older. I loved history growing up, but in my adult years, I tend to shy away from delving to far into history and even getting involved in politics, civic matters and such these days just for the simple fact that all the problems in the world we live in causes so much angst, fear, and probably anger in me that it causes a great deal of stress in my daily living. Quite simply said, I worry to damn much!

Anywho, I started this most recent book a couple of weeks ago and then put it down because it just didn’t seem to be drawing me in. However, I recently picked it up again and, of course, my mind had to get caught up with where the story left off. I had to remember what had already happened in the story. It wasn’t much, but enough that I needed to remember details. It didn’t take long and this time, it drew me in. I couldn’t hardly put the book down, but there was more remaining to be read than I had already read so I am still in the reading process.

I don’t want to give the storyline away completely, but reading about the injustices (medical decisions) done to the little African American girls in this book have truly broken my heart and have completely angered me. Now remember, this book is based on true events so try to remember what it was like for African Americans in the 70’s…..try to remember everything that led up to that point in history. 10/10. I recommend this book to readers and non-readers alike. It has opened my eyes in more ways than one!
