Elderly Couples

Random Musings of One Tired Momma

The other day, I had the privilege of witnessing an endearing act of love between an elderly husband and wife. For some reason, the moment was one of awe for me. I am a hopeless romantic. I love the happily-ever-after movies, the guy always gets the gal reading treasures, and songs, movies, books, real-life moments portraying utterly selfless acts of love in the space of merely seconds.

This is not my photo. It’s a photo I retrieved from the Internet, but it represents the point I am trying to make.

As I get older, these moments stick in my mind a little longer and I tend to notice them more often. We often take big and small moments for granted, foolishly believing we have so many more ahead of us in which we will witness and actually be part of. However, if life has taught me anything, it’s that tomorrow is NOT promised to anyone. So, today, make it count in moments…..for everyone. Some of my most treasured moments come from every day, run-of-the-mill experiences in my day with just that right amount of ‘awe’ sprinkled into it.

But, back to the most recent ‘awe’ moment. I was walking out to my car one day, a blustery day on this particular day, one most common for this time of year where I live. As I sat in my car, my gaze was drawn to an elderly man and his wife. They have to be close to 80 years old. The man drives a four-door pick-up truck that sits fairly high from the ground. It’s not lifted or anything. It may even be typical height for this particular vehicle. He is of average male height, standing about 1/2 foot or more taller than his wife. She is a shorter lady. As was common in their era, he opened the door for her and proceeded to open the back passenger door. I watched him from my car window with a smile as he reached inside the back seat to grab a small step stool. He placed it on the ground at her feet and held her elbow as she stepped on it to climb into the truck. He then closed the door for her and replaced the stool to the back seat, closing that door as well. My heart glowed watching this exchange.

It was just an ordinary day in the midst of winter, snow on the ground, slight breeze, and sky looking not quite so bright as one would hope. But what a treasure it was to witness this gesture between a husband and wife. We don’t know their story. For most, their story will never be known, but I will say that after at least fifty years of marriage (I’m assuming), love remains. I truly feel blessed when I get lucky enough to catch fleeting moments such as this.

I hope you find this story as endearing as I did when I seen this couple. And I hope you let it impact you as much as it has impacted me.

Until next time, my friends.
