Random Musings of One Tired Momma
What would you do if you lost all your possessions?
I came across this question recently when perusing the Internet and it prompted some thoughts.
You see, we have been trying to get to a more simpler way of living, eliminating the ‘extras’ that weigh us down and clog our minds with worry and stress. To help with that, we try to stay busier with our life (getting some animals, doing chores, cleaning up the property in order to make it more usable for how we want to use it) and with our children. To further our quest to become more homestead-y, I bought peaches, pears, apples, and nectarines from the Fruit Truck and I relearned how to can. The kids and I also chose to homeschool this year so we have been busy with that. My hubby purchased a Jersey cow so we can start milking. Who doesn’t love fresh milk?!? When we bought her a month ago, we thought she would be giving birth soon, but the calf still isn’t here. we are thinking any day now. Next year, I would like to have a garden that can feed my family and be able to sell some of the fresh garden produce to help sustain our life. My biggest goal is to be able to provide for our family completely on what we grow or produce. My husband wants to live a country life and isn’t afraid of the hard work it takes, but I believe having a daily job that takes him off the property is something that he enjoys. Therefore, I’m pretty certain it will be a long time before he gives that up.

So, back to possessions……
I have contemplated this many times before I ever saw the question while perusing on the Internet. I have asked myself, ‘what can I get rid of,’ my husband and I just discussed last night about homesteading and he asked, ‘so does that mean you will get rid of the internet, the phone, etc,’ and then, of course, the general spring cleaning/decluttering that most people go through each year. I look around me and I think to myself, ‘what I am holding onto that I just don’t need to hang onto anymore?’ ‘What do we have that is just lying around and can be repurposed or reused?’ And then I think of the cold weather coming and the time that just keeps slipping away. There tends to never be enough time!
So, what would I do if I lost all my possessions?
What choice would I have other than getting on with my life, rebuilding of sorts. But if I lost all my possessions, I would be able to rebuild the life I actually want without the hassle of having everything I don’t need and not having the discipline to part with it. I read somewhere that the more we have, the more stress we are under because we are fighting so hard to hold onto what we have. It’s a vicious cycle.
The best we can do, is keep plugging away at it, until we reach our homesteading goals.
