Random Musings of One Tired Momma
I recently watched movie about a husband and wife with two children. One of the children was diagnosed with Leukemia and for whatever reasons, the doctors weren’t able to treat it and neither parent nor the brother were a match for treatment or donating. The child’s main doctor suggested that the couple have another child using their eggs/sperm, but engineer it somehow so it would be a match for the sick child. Basically, have a child to be a donor child. The girl decided to sue her parents for medical rights to her body and she won. They could no longer use any part of her body without her consent. However, before the case reached the verdict, her sister died.

Bonus: the first person to tell me the name of the movie will receive a prize! But rules are as follows:
- I am running the contest until April 12. On April 14th, I will contact the winner.
- To enter the drawing, you must comment FACEBOOK on this post. However, for winning purposes, you will need to message THE NAME OF THE MOVIE and your contact information to Shannon Avard on FB.
- One entry per person.
Happy playing! Good luck to you all 🙂
Anyway, the movie really got me thinking about life and ethical behavior concerning life. Abortion has been the topic of ethical discussions for many years – since before Roe vs Wade. Honestly speaking, ethics has a major impact on the medical field, as it should. I mean, who are any one of us to make decisions concerning someone else’s life, but more importantly, a life created by God? Let’s think about it……..we have abortion, mercy killing, donating organs, organ transplants, freezing embryos, stem cell research, death penalty, human cloning, gene therapy, life support machines, modern medicines to prolong life, gender surgery, and the list goes on for how much we intervene in life saving measures. What truly is right and ethical? At what point does it become not right or unethical? Where does it end?
Let’s go back to the movie mentioned above (I will be waiting for your responses on what the movie is called, btw!) ——
- The youngest daughter was conceived for the sole purpose of being a donor child for her sister. Ethical? Unethical?
- The sick daughter was ready to die…ready for her family’s suffering to end….ready for her own suffering to end. Ethical? Unethical?
- The mother kept fighting and fighting for the health of her child, for her daughter to be cured of cancer despite what her youngest daughter had to endure in the name of saving her older sister’s life. Ethical? Unethical?
I’m sure there are more ethics questioning scenes in the movie, but we will stick with these three. I am not here to argue or defend anything – at this point. I have my arguments, but ultimately, I would like to look more into what the Bible teaches and research more of these issues. My goal in this post is for you to consider these same issues. We all need to go to our Bibles for answers, but we also need to study the issues more in-depth. So much is happening in the world today in the name of science and as Christians, we need to understand the repercussions of these medical advancements and what they mean for us as a people.
God tells us His plan in the Bible, but He doesn’t say when. However, so much of what the Bible is telling us is coming to fruition. We need to turn our eyes and our hearts to the Lord.
We just never know when the last days will be. We do not have control over life or death, unfortunately…..or fortunately….I guess it depends how you look at it. But as a Catholic woman, I want to be an informed supporter and un-supporter of what is right and ethical according to God.
Peace be with you all as you consider these issues. And as always, don’t be wary about responding. Be honest, but respectful. Use your words for kindness rather than trying to maim.
