How Two Health Crises Left Us Financially Sidelined

Life hits you fast. But what happens when life deals you two massive health blows back-to-back? You get tossed into a swirling vortex of fear, pain, and overwhelming financial anxiety. This is our story—a sudden journey through emergency rooms, operating theaters, and the crippling reality of medical debt.

As a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom, I’m used to managing a budget carefully. My husband is our sole provider. But nothing could have prepared us for the expenses of two major crises hitting within a single month.

The Domino Effect of Gallstones

My ordeal started with the acute pain of gallstones. We managed the first diagnosis, getting the gallstones removed in a procedure that felt like a major intrusion into our budget and routine. We figured that was the end of it. We spent the next month recovering and trying to catch up on bills.

But just a month later, the entire gallbladder had to be removed. As I was scheduling that second surgery, the universe decided we weren’t stressed enough.

The Kick That Caused a Catastrophe

Between my two procedures, my husband was kicked in the knee by a horse.

For a week or two, we focused on the massive bruise, treating it as a standard injury. The swelling eventually went down, but the knee remained sore, hot to the touch, and strangely hard. Then, the real alarm sounded: a long, red streak appeared on his inner thigh, extending down his leg.

We went into the day clinic. After some exam questions, it was determined to be a blood clot so we were referred for an ultrasound. The trauma from the kick had caused a massive blood clot, stretching all the way from his groin to his ankle.

When Worry Becomes a War

Suddenly, we were facing a double medical emergency. My husband, the one person whose paycheck keeps us afloat, was immediately put on aggressive blood thinners that cost a fortune! He could continue to work, but couldn’t sit or stand for long periods of time.

The medical bills began rolling in. Every hospital envelope feels less like a receipt and more like an eviction notice. The emotional burden of concern for the blood clot to travel into his lungs is a huge worry for us, and now the concern over medical bills and finances.

Finding Our Way Back to Health

This whole terrifying experience has been a brutal lesson. We realize our health can’t be an afterthought. We’ve made a pact to change our approach to wellness:

  • Prioritizing Wholesome Food: Less quick-and-easy processed foods and more whole, anti-inflammatory meals to support healing.
  • Finding Natural Balance: Researching responsible, natural remedies and supplements to complement—not replace—our doctor-prescribed care.
  • Moving Forward: Committing to gentle activity and movement as soon as medically cleared, recognizing that our bodies need care, not punishment.

We pray for our healing and for the strength to climb out from under this crushing debt. If you are reading this and juggling medical bills with your family’s basic needs, know that you are not alone. The system is flawed, but our commitment to health, both physical and financial, has never been stronger.
