Old School Love in a Popcorn Sale: A Lesson in Partnership
We were recently at a meeting for a play my children are in. Our daughter is selling popcorn and coffee trip—a wonderful opportunity through our diocese. She was hustling, order forms in hand, selling popcorn and coffee to finance her adventure. Watching her approach strangers reminds me how much courage it takes to put yourself out there!
She walked up to a kind-looking gentleman, about my age, and asked him if he’d like to purchase anything. His response was something I haven’t heard often these days, and it just stopped me in my tracks.
He smiled, a gentle, knowing look, and said something along the lines of, “Oh, I don’t know. Go over there and ask my wife. I’ll pay for it, but she’s the one who decides.” He pointed across the room where his wife was chatting with friends.

It was a small moment, paraphrased slightly, but it resonated so deeply with the old-fashioned values I hold dear.
The Beauty of Mutual Respect
In that brief exchange, he didn’t defer to her out of weakness or indifference. He did it out of respect and shared partnership. He was acknowledging her role—the one who manages the household pantry, the one who knows whether they have too much popcorn already, the one who sets the tone for their shared purchases.
I am unapologetically a believer in the hearth and home. I believe in the fundamental beauty of a man and woman intentionally building a life together, working in unity to accomplish their marriage and raise their family according to their Biblical beliefs.
His response felt like a tangible display of that belief:
- Shared Authority: It wasn’t “I’ll decide.” It was “We decide.” He recognized that in their marriage, decisions flow through them both, even down to a simple bag of popcorn.
- Trust in Her Role: He trusted her judgment and expertise regarding their domestic life. It showed that she is a valued and essential voice in their daily operation.
- A Unified Front: To the outside world, they presented a united front. He didn’t want to undermine her budget or their planning.
A Quiet Testament
In a time when marriages are often portrayed as a battle of wills or two parallel but separate lives, this couple offered a quiet, beautiful testament to collaboration.
It was a reminder that Biblical partnership isn’t about rigid hierarchy; it’s about two people using their individual strengths to serve their shared mission. He provides, she manages, they consult, and together, they steward their resources and their home.
My daughter went over to ask the wife, and guess what? They bought the popcorn. But the true gift was the lesson in enduring love and respectful partnership that the husband gifted to me, simply by asking his wife. It’s the kind of quiet, powerful example I hope my children carry with them into their own marriages.
What small, unexpected moment have you witnessed recently that gave you a glimpse into a beautiful, lasting marriage?
