Clinging to Truth When You Feel Profoundly Out of Place

I have to be honest with you all: my reservoir of patience is running dry.

The feelings I’m wrestling with lately are rooted in a deep, burning frustration and a relentless anger. It comes from the stress of our current shared living arrangement, where the simple, foundational comfort of having our own space is constantly undermined.

It’s easy to think of shared living as just a mild inconvenience, but the struggle is in the subtle, daily loss of domestic control.

I feel profoundly out of place, like a long-term guest who is constantly intruding. I miss the relief of closing a door and knowing that the space—the light, the clutter, the quiet—is entirely ours.

The Invisible Chains of “House Rules”

The weight of this situation lies in the constant, silent negotiation. As a homemaker who finds peace and purpose in creating order, this lack of autonomy is suffocating:

  • I cannot decorate. My aesthetic—my visual comfort—is sidelined by external preferences.
  • I cannot arrange. The flow of the space is determined by others, making our everyday movements feel awkward and temporary.
  • The kitchen arrangements, the very heart of nourishment for my family, are dictated by house rules. My natural rhythm is constantly interrupted, and my creative planning is held hostage.

No, the people we live with don’t control us, but controlling the rules of the house achieves the same end: it steals the sanctuary we worked so hard to build. The energy spent on navigating these tiny compromises leaves me feeling exhausted and angry. I just want a home of our own.

Finding Anchor in the Storm

When the anger is white-hot and the feeling of being lost is overwhelming, where do we turn? When the physical sanctuary is stripped away, we must recognize that our true sanctuary was never entirely material.

We are reminded that our peace is rooted not in our circumstances, but in the unwavering promises of God. When we feel like we are losing the battle for our space, we must cling to the spiritual truth that our identity is secure and our hope is fixed.

If you, too, are struggling with feelings of anger, frustration, and displacement today, let these words from the Catholic Bible anchor your heart:

Psalm 46:1 (NABRE): “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress.”

Reflection: Even when your four walls feel like a source of distress, God is the ultimate, constant refuge that cannot be moved or negotiated away.

Isaiah 41:10 (NABRE): “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

Reflection: He acknowledges your fear and anger, but promises to uphold you. Your strength to endure this difficult season comes from Him, not from your circumstances.

We may not have the perfect home arrangement right now, but we have a perfect God who provides the ultimate peace. We will keep showing up, keep loving, and keep trusting that this difficult, frustrating season is temporary. Our true home is waiting.
