Screaming at God and Finding the Answer

We all have those days—the ones that arrive after a slow, toxic build-up of stress, conflicting emotions, and relentless pressure. Days where the tight seal on your composure finally breaks.

Recently, I hit that wall.

It wasn’t a gentle breakdown; it was a full-blown, ugly meltdown. I was crying, frustrated, and in that moment of absolute depletion, my conversation with God turned into a screaming match. I wasn’t questioning Him quietly; I was railing against the fundamental difficulty of the spiritual life.

Shortly after, still crying and still utterly defeated, I managed to express my rawest question to my husband through choked sobs:

“If God wants us to live a life for him, why does he make it so hard? Why doesn’t he just make it easier?”

The instant those words left my mouth—that demand for a path paved with comfort and ease—a quiet, undeniable answer settled in my heart. It was a gentle, yet firm, reminder straight from the Gospels:

“Then he said to them all, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'” (Luke 9:23)

It hit me with the force of a revelation: God never promised easy.

The Comfort in the Cross

The spiritual life isn’t meant to be a cozy Sunday picnic; it’s meant to be a pilgrimage up Calvary. The very difficulty I was screaming about—the stress, the emotional conflict, the demand to choose patience over vengeance, love over bitterness—that is the cross.

My meltdown was the flesh reacting violently to the call of the Spirit. My desire for ease was my “self” trying desperately to save its own life, which Jesus warns us against (Luke 9:24).

The beauty in the reminder of the Cross is that it makes our suffering meaningful. When the difficulty comes—whether it’s the external trials or the internal spiritual warfare—we know we are not abandoned. We are simply following in the footsteps of Christ.

If you’ve been screaming at God this week, demanding an easier path, take comfort: You are not far from the answer. The cross is heavy, but it is precisely in carrying it, moment by painful moment, that we find true life.
