Nothing like a murder case to bring out ALL the amateur detectives.

The Clancy trial is well underway, and Facebook is FULL of theories. I haven’t been following the Clancy trial too closely, but I have enjoyed reading some of the theories. Not in a disrespectful, laugh-at-you kind of way, either. Some of them actually get my brain working.

I would’ve made a great detective.

Anywho, I bet everyone posting a theory watches all the crime shows. You know who you are.

With that said, let’s jump to the Erhart case in our own little slice of heaven.

What happened that day?

On August 6, 2026, 22-year-old Kailey Erhart allegedly attacked her three young children, ages 5 months, 1 year and 3 years, with a kitchen knife inside their home. The 5-month-old and 3-year-old died. The 1-year-old survived after surgery.

Police responded to the single-wide mobile home around 5:40 p.m. after dispatch received a report that the mother had locked herself inside with the children and intended to kill them.

Officers found the children unresponsive with neck wounds. They also found Erhart covered in blood, holding a knife to her own throat and telling officers to kill her.

Absolutely horrific.

But what happened in the days leading up to it?

According to reports, the father told investigators that Erhart had talked about suicide and killing the children. He had also been making plans to divorce her.

He reportedly said she had recently purchased a handgun and threatened him with it. He managed to get the gun away from her, disassemble it and scatter the pieces. During that struggle, she allegedly bit and scratched him.

His phone reportedly contained a video of Erhart carrying one of the children while holding the pistol at her hip. In the video, she allegedly says, “Say goodbye to your kids.”

The children’s grandmother reportedly said Erhart chased them out of the house with a knife and locked the door.

Police have said the couple was in the process of separating, and the father had previously reported concerns about Erhart threatening to hurt herself and the children.

Erhart had also reportedly been in a mental health facility 12–18 months before the tragedy and was cleared to be with the children after discharge.

And this is where my amateur detective brain starts asking questions.

Not accusations. Questions.

Amateur Detective Hour:

1. The husband reportedly told authorities she had been making threats against herself and the children.
2. There has been speculation about him cheating. Is that true? Is it false? I don’t know.
3. He reportedly disarmed her, took the gun apart and scattered the pieces, yet she was later able to force him out of the house with a knife. How did all of that unfold?
4. He reportedly sent her the advertisement for the handgun. Why?
5. We’re hearing that he had reported concerns to social services, was talking about separation, AND there are allegations that he was seeing someone else and leaving her with three very young children. What is actually true?
6. We know there were reportedly mental health concerns for 12–18 months before this happened. How much did he know? What did he know? What did anyone else know? And CPS reportedly cleared her to be with her children. What did they know at that point? What information did they have when they made that decision?

Again, I am NOT saying I know the answers.

I wasn’t there.

I don’t have the entire investigation.

I don’t know what was happening inside that home when nobody else was looking.

And Kailey Erhart has not entered a plea. She is accused of horrific crimes, but accusations are not convictions.

I also want to be really careful here because I don’t want my questions to be taken as me condemning her or trying to make what happened any less horrific. I believe mental health can be a very real factor in something like this, and I think a lot of women understand just how much of a rollercoaster pregnancy, postpartum, hormones and everything that comes with motherhood can be. That doesn’t mean we excuse horrific actions. It means we should be willing to look at the whole picture before deciding we understand what happened.

And that’s the part that keeps bothering me.

There were reportedly warning signs. There were concerns about her mental health. There were reports of threats against herself and the children. There were reportedly concerns brought to social services. There was a history that apparently included mental health treatment, and at some point she was cleared to be with her children.

So how did we get from all of that to August 6?

Somewhere in between those warning signs and the day those babies died, there has to be a story. There are things that were said, things that were reported, decisions that were made and probably things that nobody knew until it was too late.

And I want to know what those things were.

What did people know? What did they report? What did CPS know? What did the mental health professionals know? What did the father know? What did the family know? What did everyone think was being handled?

And maybe, when all the facts come out, there will be answers that make perfect sense. Maybe there are things we don’t know yet that completely change the way we look at some of this.

That’s why I’m not interested in picking a side right now.

I’m interested in understanding what happened.

Because two babies are dead. Another little child is fighting to recover. A mother is facing horrific accusations, and an entire family has been changed forever.

There needs to be truth before there can ever be accountability.
