The Person Behind the Number

We hear the numbers all the time.

How many people die by suicide. How many attempts happen. How many families are affected.

But sometimes numbers make it easy to forget what they actually represent.

Every number was a person.

A person who had a favorite song, a favorite food, a laugh someone loved, a birthday someone celebrated. Someone who was someone’s child, someone’s brother or sister, someone’s parent, someone’s friend.

They had good days. Bad days. Plans. Memories. People who loved them.

They were more than the worst moment of their life.

And the family left behind doesn’t grieve a statistic. They grieve a person.

That’s why suicide prevention matters to me. Because behind every number is a life that mattered, and there are still people here who need us to notice them, listen to them and remind them that they matter too.

Don’t just remember the numbers.

Remember the people.
