The more I learn about this situation, the more conflicted I become. And I want to say that because just recently I defended the fact that postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis can seriously affect a woman’s mind and behavior. I still believe that. I know what PPD felt like for me, and I know that unless you have been through it, you really don’t understand how dark it can get. I also know that not every woman experiences it the same way.
But now I’m reading that Kailey allegedly had a gun, that Mr. Erhart was able to disarm her and take it apart, and that she was later able to force him and the grandmother out of the house with a knife while the children were still inside.
And I’m sorry, but this is where I start struggling.
I don’t know what was going through his mind. I wasn’t there. I don’t know exactly what happened in those moments or what he was thinking. Maybe there is much more to this than we know right now.
But especially knowing that he had already voiced concerns about the children’s safety before this terrible tragedy, I just can’t stop thinking about it.
If he was already worried about their safety, and then things escalated to the point that he was able to disarm her and take the gun apart, and she was then threatening them with a knife, how did the children still end up being left inside?
I’m not saying this to excuse anything Kailey did. What happened to those babies is absolutely heartbreaking. And I still believe her mental health needs to be looked at and understood before we decide exactly what this all means.
But understanding her mental illness doesn’t mean we stop asking questions about everyone else who was there.
Because at the end of the day, there were three little children who couldn’t protect themselves.
One adult was allegedly trying to hurt them. Another adult was there.
And I keep asking myself, how did nobody get those babies out?
Maybe there is an explanation I haven’t heard yet. I hope there is, because right now, it just doesn’t make sense to me.
I’m not trying to sit here and decide who is guilty. I’m saying I don’t think Kailey should be the only person we are asking questions about.
Those babies deserved to be protected by every adult who could protect them.
And that’s the part I just can’t get past.
FYI – her record shows nothing violent until this tragedy, but neither does his. So, all I have is questions.
Please continue praying for ths family 🙏
