Two mothers, two tragedies: a hard comparison

Two cases making headlines right now involve mothers accused of killing their young children, but the circumstances couldn’t be more different.

Lindsay Clancy (Duxbury, MA) — A former labor & delivery nurse, she strangled her three children in January 2023, then jumped from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed. Her trial is happening now, nearly 3.5 years later. Her defense argues postpartum psychosis and possible overmedication; prosecutors say she knew what she was doing and is criminally responsible.

Kailey Erhart (Mandan, ND) — this case just broke yesterday (Aug 6, 2026). She allegedly stabbed her three young kids; two died, one survived. Police found her holding a knife to her own throat. Reports say she and the children’s father were in the process of separating. No trial, no established mental health defense yet, just a fresh arrest and a $3M bond.

Both are devastating. But one has had years of psychiatric evaluation and courtroom scrutiny; the other is barely 24 hours old, with the full story still unfolding.
